Advent 2008 at Old
South Church:
ADVENT PRAYER & COMMUNION: Thursdays, December 4 - 18 at 12:30 pm
in the Gordon Chapel. Wait, watch, and pray for God to be more fully
present in our
world. Join Old South for a series of brief, midday worship services of
song, silence, scripture, and communion.
POINSETTIA DISPLAY: Contributions in honor or memory of loved ones and
special events are being accepted for the display of poinsettias on the
chancel during Advent and Christmas. The cost is $15. Cards are
available at
the Front Desk. The deadline is Sunday, December 7.
ADVENT CHRISTMAS POETRY/PROSE EVENT: Sunday, December 14 at 9:45 am.
Led by Theologian-in-Residence Don Wells. Old South members and friends
are invited to read their favorite poem or prose, or their own writing,
aloud during 2 minute periods. We can accommodate 20 readers, so sign
up today by calling
Don at 617/425-5159, or by e-mailing him at
<granwell@comcast.net>. Be sure
to indicate what you will be reading so we can avoid duplication. If you
choose not to read, come anyway and listen to Old South members and
friends.
Some readings will give us pause for holy reflection while others may
induce
laughter and remembrances of Christmases past. All of them will help us
celebrate the season more fully.
CHESTNUTS ROASTING: A SECESSION HOLIDAY CONCERT: Friday, December 5 at
8 pm. Boston Secession, which includes four members of Old South’s own
choir, will sing carols and hymns spanning five centuries—spiced up,
Secession-style, with a sprinkling of parodies by P.D.Q. Bach and Tom
Lehrer. OSC members will be offered a discounted ticket rate of $15.
Tickets may be purchased on-line, or at the door, or by calling
617/499-4860. For more information, visit
<www.bostonsecession.org>.
CHRISTMAS ALTERNATIVE GIVING: This holiday season give to a worthy
cause in a loved one’s name. Caribbean U-Turn Ministries serves youth
and families,
who reside in the Mattapan community, to combat health risks resulting
from
social, cultural, and economic adversities. This year donations will go
specifically to Haiti to help the hungry and those displaced from their
homes due to poverty or flooding. A table will be available during
Fellowship Hour each Sunday in December with information and to accept
donations.
GIFT AND TOY DRIVE: The Old South Church School invites you to
participate
in City Mission Society’s 2008 Christmas Shop. We will be collecting new
toys and gifts to be distributed by CMS to families in need. There is a
particular need for gifts for teenagers. CMS is also recommending $15+
gifts
cards from stores such as CVS, Walgreens or Target. We will be receiving
gifts from November 30 through December 14. For information, check the
bulletin board by the elevator on the fourth floor or contact Tricia
Hazeltine at 617/425-5148.
HOLIDAY
ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR: Saturday, December 6 from 9:30 am—3 pm in
the Gordon Chapel. Craft offerings will include photography, glass art,
jewelry,
handbags, textiles, wood-turned bowls, herbal products, note cards, and
more! For more information, contact Adriana Repetto at
<j-amead@juno.com>.
CHRISTMAS CRAFT FUN: Saturday, December 6 from 10 am - 12 pm in Mary
Norton Hall. Come, make holiday decorations! This event is concurrent
with the
pageant dress rehearsal. Older children may make crafts when their
scenes
are not being rehearsed. Younger children, who need not rehearse, will
have
an opportunity to get their costume and run through their walk-on part.
Children five and under should have a responsible adult stay with them.
For
more information, contact Tricia Hazeltine at 617/425-5148.
COOKIE WALK: Hey, all you bakers! The Old South Holiday Fair needs your
cookies. If you have the world's best gingerbread cookies or the recipe
for your
Grandmother's secret drop cookies, we want them! Don't bake? How about
cookies from your favorite bakery? No grocery store cookies please.
Cookies
should not be individually wrapped. We want nuts and no nuts-just tell
us
which are which. The cookies can be dropped off either on Friday,
December 5 or first thing on Saturday, December 6. For more
information, contact Elizabeth England at 617/571-7216 or at <blizabethe@yahoo.com>.
CHRISTMAS PAGEANT & POTLUCK LUNCHEON: Sunday, December 14 following
11 am worship in Mary Norton Hall. We’ll begin with lunch at 12:30 pm.
Please bring enough food for eight people as follows: Last names A-F
finger
desserts, G-L side dishes, and M-Z main dishes. You can drop your dish
off
in Mary Norton Hall before worship. We’ll have carol singing before the
pageant, led by Phil Stern and Evan Shu. Then stay around for this
year’s presentation, The True Story of Christmas. Everyone is invited
to join us for this memorable Old South tradition. For more
information, contact Tricia Hazeltine at 617/425-5148.
