Heard It at Council
June 12, 2007
In the last Council meeting of the program year, the
Order of the Day was a presentation by Ian Holland (Steering Committee
Chair) on the Congregational Spiritual Discernment process held during
Lent. He told Council that this was a new journey for Old South that,
in the end, provided no “tidy patterns” but instead “a rich, diverse
source of inspiration” for going forward. The analysis of the results
suggested the congregation feels that no radical changes are in order
but instead expressed “a hunger and desire to go deeper.” This process
helped our community to renew its investment in the future of Old South.
There was positive feedback on the T-like map that
described Old South’s mission in eight distinct “tracks.” Two tracks,
Looking Up (Worship) and Welcoming In (Hospitality), appear in good
shape and need only maintenance work. Two other tracks, Reaching Out
(Outreach) and Taking Care (Stewardship) are so broad in scope that
they need further discernment of priorities and might deserve
individual theme retreats. The four remaining tracks, Acting Out (Music
and the Arts), Meeting Up (Small Groups), Shaping Up (Spirituality and
Formation), and Speaking Out (Public Voice), would be dealt with by
establishing “Theme Teams” to study each area.
A new Discernment Support committee will be
established and was given the go ahead to get started as soon as its
roster is completed. They will aim to start the new process with a
kickoff lunch on Sunday, September 23, aiming for a new report to
Annual Meeting the following February. Council accepted this report by
the Discernment Steering Committee and applauded its work.
In regular reports, OSC’s yearly budget appears to
be in fine shape with our cash flow actually ahead of the curve in
anticipation of the typical summer slowdown in receipts. The Deacons
are looking into the possibility of glass doors for the chapel and are
funding the OSC bus that will head to General Synod. They also reported
that Jan Monsma will step down as the chair of the Congregational Care
and Support committee in February after years of service above and
beyond the call of duty. Music reported that Brian Jones’ contract as
Interim Minister of Music was extended to October to help the church
deal with its next steps to fill the open Minister of Music position.
Stewardship has nearly finished its well-received Spring Calling
“check-in” program to our congregation and is putting together its fall
stewardship program, which will include Rev. Elizabeth Myer-Bolton,
pastor of Hope Church in JP, as keynote speaker at the Stewardship
luncheon.
Communications gave a lengthy report showing updated
graphics for the OSC webpage, outdoor banner signage, and new logo and
stationary. Website usage statistics were also presented for the past
program year, showing some 27,000 visitors (well over half as
first-timers) to our website with the most popular links being the
Photo Albums, the Sermons (text and podcasts), the Sanctuary Photo
Tour, the Sunday Bulletin, the Music page, and the Service Recordings.
The statistics are showing that there is great interest in seeing,
hearing, and experiencing our church and worship experience by outside
web surfers.
In staff reports, Quinn Caldwell said that we would
be looking for a new ministerial intern since Tadd Allman-Morton is
ready for ordination and awaiting a call from a new church. Ian Holland
is in-care at OSC and Brent Damrow is on his way to Yale Divinity
School. Quinn highlighted his report with an update on the success of
the Sunday Morning Café Fellowship, which has showed that there
is a hunger for more fellowship and Christian education, and that this
new format does not seem to add extra burden on our staff. The
Café will continue through the summer and into the new program
year.
Nancy Taylor highlighted her report with an
interesting article reprint, “Africentric Church” from Christian
Century, that describes Chicago’s Trinity UCC (Senior Minister Jeremiah
Wright spoke at OSC in November 2004, and Barak Obama is a member). She
said that Old South would continue to emphasize worship during the
summer as it is the church’s busiest time for tourists and represents
great potential for outreach. The full weekly worship schedule will
continue in place during the summer months. The volunteer summer choir
will be supported by four paid soloists throughout the summer. Sexton
Elias Perez has hit on a good system of keeping the Sanctuary cool
during the summer heat. And either Nancy or Quinn will be in-house at
OSC all summer. So, Old South will continue at full-speed through the
next few months—however, Council will not, as it adjourned until its
next meeting in September after a full night’s program.
Old South Says Goodbye to Tadd Allman-Morton
Elsewhere in this publication, Ministerial Intern
Tadd Allman-Morton announced that his time with us will come to a close
at the end of August. Tadd has been approved for ordination in the UCC
pending a call to a church and is currently circulating his ministerial
profile. With his skills, experience, and gifts, we anticipate that God
will not take much time to bring Tadd and a good church together, and
we have set this end date in that hope. We will say farewell in worship
on Sunday, August 26; we hope all who have been touched by Tadd’s
presence among us will attend this service of Godspeed as well as a
farewell reception for him after worship that day.
Tadd came to serve at Old South in the Fall of 2004
while a student at Andover-Newton Theological School. He has served as
a leader of the 20s/30s fellowship group and as a staff liaison to the
Christian Service and Outreach and the Congregational Care and Support
committees. For the first part of his time with us, Tadd occasionally
taught Sunday morning Bible study; in the last year, he has taken
primary leadership responsibility with skill, faithfulness, and wisdom.
In his first and third years, he led Sunday morning worship; his
particular leadership style and voice there were a gift to all who
experienced them. Without doubt, the greatest piece of the legacy Tadd
leaves behind will be the jazz service, which he created with
Ministerial Intern Jeff VonWald and Jazz Music Coordinator Willie
Sordillo in the Fall of 2005. The service has enriched our worship life
enormously and been a blessing to hundreds of visitors, first-timers,
tourists, and many worshipers that later would come to join Old South.
Worship is at the center of our life together as the church; the gift
of a new worship service is one of the greatest gifts we could have
received and, Tadd, we thank you for that gift. We thank you, too, for
your three years of service in this place, for your big voice and
hearty laugh, your mysticism, your faith, your leadership, and your
colleagueship. We pray for you a future of service to the church bright
with God’s blessing!

New Faces Around Old South
Welcome Jessica!
Old South offers a warm welcome to Jessica Goodknight as our new
Daytime Receptionist. Jessica originally hails from Iowa but has lived
in the Boston area for ten years. Her interests include reading and
hosting parties for friends. Her five-year-old daughter, Alexia, would
like to be either a lawyer or actress when she grows up, depending on
the day of the week.
Welcome Diane!
Old South went to Simmons to find an intern to work on our archives
this summer . and we found one of our own members, Diane
Pierce-Williams. A librarian at Milton Academy, Diane is in a graduate
program in Archives Management. She will spend about 200 hours at Old
South during the next few months organizing and filing important
records on our building restoration and improvement projects.
Theologian-in-Residence
In exchange for a modest office from which to work on a manuscript, The
Rev. Professor Mark Burrows, Professor of the History of Christianity
at Andover Newton Theological School, will serve as Old South’s
Theologian-in-Residence, August 2007 to September 2008. In this
capacity Mark has agreed to teach two four-week classes (one in the
fall and one in the spring). He will periodically assist in worship.
Mark, who is on sabbatical, is researching and writing on the “renewal
of theology as an art, exploring the intersection of poetics as a
peculiar (and neglected) form of theological imagination.” No stranger
to Old South, Mark taught one of the Church in the World classes during
Lent in 2006.
Some Treasures-to-Go: Tadd’s Farewell
I will be taking many memories with me as I leave
Old South and venture into the world as a (no-longer-intern) Minister.
I will be leaving at the end of August after an amazing three years.
The welcome I have felt here and the support you have provided me will
spiritually nourish me for years to come. I am sure stories of this
place will color and enhance many sermons, too. (You all signed the
waivers, right?) Leading Bible Study has been riotously fun and joyous.
Events with the 20s and 30s Group made me feel like part of a huge
family. Working with the Outreach Committee helped me see great ways to
do God’s work in the world. Participating in the worship life here has
been unbelievably rich. I am honored to have been trusted with taking
on so many different aspects of worship: not the least of which was
overseeing Jazz Worship. What wonderful gifts you have all given me!
Like Mary, I will long treasure these things and
ponder them in my heart. I hope that between now and the end of August
we will have opportunities to share our memories of the last three
years together.
Blessings to you all, your brother in Christ,
Tadd

Minister
of Music
Update as 5/1/2007:
Due to medical reasons,
Mark A. Anderson has tendered his resignation and will not be assuming
Old South's Minister of Music position this summer as planned. Council
has appointed an ad hoc committee to study our options on proceeding
from this point. Look for further details to come.
The Minister of Music Search Committee is proud to introduce the
candidate we have identified as our hands-down, number-one top choice
to serve as the next Minister of Music of Old South Church in Boston:
Mark Anderson.
The congregation is invited to meet Mark Anderson at an Organ
Demonstration and Conversation in the Sanctuary, followed by a Dessert
Reception in Gordon Chapel on Tuesday, February 6th at 7 pm.
For the Choir, Old South Ringers, and Music Committee: you are invited
to meet and greet Mark at a special pre-reception at 6 pm. A light
supper is included.
The Church Council will consider and vote on the recommendation of the
Minister of Music Search Committee at their meeting on February 13.
[The Council has unanimously approved Mark A. Anderson as our new
Minister of Music at its Feb. 13 meeting.]
Since 1996 Mark A. Anderson has served as the Organist/Choirmaster
at
the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia. He is the
principal organist and conductor for all church ensembles including:
The Gallery Choir (a semi-professional choir), choirs for children and
youth, and the Adult Handbell Choir. In addition, since 2004, he has
served as the Music Director and Conductor of the Pennsylvania
Girlchoir (100 girls in grades 3-12 from diverse economic and
racial-ethnic backgrounds). A composer, arranger, and performer of
sacred music, Mark has national and international experience as a
performer, teacher, lecturer, and choir director.
