Old South Church provides an engaging and comprehensive Church School program for infants through Senior High School.  Rooted in the Scriptures and our Christian tradition, we share the love of God and seek together a deeper experience of Christian faith.

INFANT and PRESCHOOL

Infant and Preschool rooms are open on Sundays from 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and are staffed by trained volunteers and professionals.  The Blue Room provides loving and tender care for children, newborn to two years. The Green Room, for ages two through five, offers opportunities for play, crafts and Bible stories.

THE ARTS OF WORSHIP

This Sunday morning program begins at 9:45 a.m. with informal fellowship and activities. At 10 am church schoolers may participate in arts activities, all of which are designed to enhance and deepen their participation in worship. Activities include chime choir, voice choir, drumming, drama and a variety of visual arts. Parents are invited to participate in either this program or in adult education offerings. At 11 a.m. church schoolers will join the congregation for the first part of worship and then proceed to their classes.

WORSHIP

<>Every Sunday children from kindergarten and up join the rest of the congregation in the sanctuary for the first part of the service. They may worship with their classmates and teachers or with their parents.

CHURCH SCHOOL CLASSES

Young people from kindergarten through eighth grade meet during the eleven o’clock hour for Church School. Parent volunteers share responsibility for the classes with Church School staff. They use the Whole People of God, an ecumenical, international and inclusive curriculum, focused on the stories of the Bible and upon the development of Christian faith.

MUSIC TIMES

<>Music time is a regular component of the Arts of Worship and Church School. These times offer an opportunity to sing, play Orff instruments and participate in a variety of musical activities. Students learn music from a range of musical, cultural and church traditions. Children sing in worship several times in the course of the year.

CHIME CHOIR

A chime choir, for those third grade and older, also meets on Sunday morning for rehearsal, with periodic participation in worship.

YOUTH FELLOWSHIP

<>Young people, ninth grade and older, meet at 10:00 a.m. for discussion and action around issues of faith. The group goes on retreat and participates in service projects.

SUMMER PROGRAMMING

Old South Church offers Church School programming throughout the year. The Blue Room and Green Room provide infant, toddler and preschool care. The multi-age class provides an opportunity for elementary aged children to learn together in an informal setting. All are welcome, whether for one Sunday or for many. Activity packets are also available for children and youth worshiping in the sanctuary.

Adult Formation

At Old South, we believe that Christian formation is a lifelong process, not a goal that can be checked off at Confirmation. Believing that study is an essential part of a faithful Christian life, we offer an array of learning opportunities for adults.

ADULT EDUCATION HOUR

This is the centerpiece of our adult education program. Each Sunday from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., two different options are offered.

· At Adult Bible Study you can prepare to experience each morning’s worship more deeply by studying the preaching texts of the day.

· Choose from a rotating series of other options, including New Member Inquiry Classes, examinations of poetry and faith, and more. Check the colored insert in the bulletin for each morning’s offering.

AFTER-CHURCH FORUMS

On many Sundays, all-church forums and other educational events take place at 12:30.  Topics have included Constitutional issues of church and state, practices of spiritual discernment, Transgender 101, and more.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

· Monday evening Theological Book Group discussion and dinner.

· All-church Lenten study series, including a historical survey of the Christian church, spiritual discernment process, and more.

· Public conversations and lectures.  In the Fall of 2007, we will pay special attention to the relationships between Christianity, Judaism, and Islam in the Middle East and at home, with presentations by John Thomas, General Minister and President of the UCC, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Episcopal Archbishop of Cape Town, and others.
