A Place of Extravagant Welcome

“Behold, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it.” (Revelation 3:8)

Old South Church was gathered in 1669 amidst a storm of controversy over who could—and who could not—be baptized. A group of courageous colonists took a stand in favor of bestowing the waters of baptism more liberally, and Old South was born. Though our history is not unmarked by failure, the inclusive stance of our founders has for more than three centuries informed our identity as a community seeking to advocate for the marginalized and the oppressed.

Old South is an Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ. We welcome into the life of our community all who seek to know God and live in love and fellowship with God, God’s people and God’s earth, regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, class, age, gender, marital status, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Our communion table is open to all. Our clergy officiate at both heterosexual and same gender marriages. At Old South, we believe that we need everyone, because God could be speaking to—or through—any of us!
