ENGAGING SACRED CONVERSATIONS
ON RACE
Racializing
Whiteness
Sundays, April, 13 and 27 at
9:45 am
Exploring the notion of “whiteness.” What does it mean to be “white”
and how has the notion of “whiteness” shaped understandings of “self”
and “other” in religious, political and community settings?
Led by the Rev. Nancy D. Richardson,
Old South member and Harvard Divinity School Professor
Race:
The Power of an Illusion”
Sunday, April 27 at 12:45 pm
If race doesn't exist biologically, what is it? And why should it
matter? The third part of a PBS documentary, this is the first film
about race to focus not on individual attitudes and behavior but on the
ways our institutions and policies advantage some groups at
the expense of others. Its subject is the "unmarked" race: white
people. We see how benefits quietly and often invisibly accrue to
white people. Note: this film replaces “Traces of the Trade”,
currently under a screening
restriction.

The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus. In this examination of
his religious and historical
context, Amy-Jill Levine, professor of New Testament Studies at
Vanderbilt
Divinity School and an Orthodox Jew, seeks to make of Jesus Christ a
bridge
between modern Christianity and Judaism. Levine combines humor and
truth-telling to examine Jesus’ “Jewishness” and provoke honest
conversation about how
Jews and Christians should understand Jesus, the New Testament, and
each
other. Books are available for sale at the Front Desk. Contact
Associate
Minister Quinn Caldwell if this cost is prohibitive for you.

CAN POETRY
SAVE US?
Sunday, May 4th
at 9:45 am. Led by Dr. Mark Burrows,
Theologian-in-Residence at Old South
and Professor of the History of Christianity at Andover Newton Theological School
Can Poetry Save Us?
Such a question seems initially
peculiar, if not absurd.
Saved? From what … and for
what? But what if we were to
think of faith as a form of
poetics—described by one
writer not as “another version
of the facts” but rather as
“a different way of seeing?”
What would happen if we read
the scriptures as poetic
texts inviting us to fresh
beginnings? And what if we were
to imagine church as a
community of creative persons
whose ethical commitments
were joined to a shared
desire to create beauty …
together?
Such questions lie at
the heart of the book Dr. Burrows is
writing while
Theologian-in-Residence at Old South
Church, Untamed Wisdom:
Imagination, Poetic Truth, and
the Advent of Theology. In
it he brings ancient mystical
writers, those readers of
“deep reality,” into conversation
with modern poets, writers,
painters, and composers,
considering how such artists
might help us expand our
categories of perception and
experience—at the “verge”
of our minds. Even to the
point of imagining how poetry
might save us!
For those interested
in continuing the conversation
beyond this point and
willing to read and discuss portions
of the book (in draft form),
Dr. Burrows would be happy to
arrange additional meetings
at a later date.
