Summer tech camp for kids expands into Back Bay, Old South Church

For the month of July, Old South Church will host Empow Studios' Back Bay Tech & Design Camp and Minecraft Camp. Empow Studios, based in Lexington, MA, offers summer camps at locations across Greater Boston, and even on the Cape.

Per Empow Studios' press release:

Summer is a time for fun. The pressures of homework subside and students get the chance to explore new challenges. “I can't wait to make my movie,” beams one 6th grader as she counts down the days to summer vacation.

Harnessing the potential of these open-ended days is the goal at Empow Studios’ summer camps. “We really make it fun for campers to learn,” says program director Matt Silverstein. “We mix a large array of technical learning programs with group games like Zombie Tag, Museum and some special activities that are only found at Empow.”

Empow Studios hosts nearly 1,000 campers throughout the year at its existing locations. “With such overwhelming interest, we knew it was time to expand and bring our unique creative technology camp to even more children,” says Empow founder and CEO Leonid Tunik. “Back Bay is a vibrant community with many parents who are involved professionally with technology or engineering, and recognize the value of getting their kids excited about these new types of creative tools."

Embracing Kids' Stories
“Empow Studios takes a playful approach to learning,” says Tunik. “We emphasize storytelling and creativity, and technology serves as a tool to tell stories in a rich way.” Guided by Empow instructors, who have degrees in film, music, computers and design, campers learn technical tools at their own level and pace as needed to create their projects.

Tech & Design Camps: Features robotics, 2D & 3D video game design, animation, Scratch programming, coding, 3D modeling & printing, audio engineering, digital music, and video production. Empow teaches the basics, and campers use their imagination to make their projects come alive.

Minecraft Camps: Empow focuses on various educational aspects of Minecraft. Campers learn modding, electrical engineering (via redstone circuits), architecture, game design, and world creation. Campers even create very simple computers inside Minecraft.
