Old South Church Gardens Win
Mayor’s Garden Contest
“…and you
shall be like a watered garden…” (Isaiah 58:11)
It seems that the City of Boston agrees with the hundreds of passersby
who stop to exclaim, admire, and photograph Old South Church’s
gardens each day. The gardens have been selected First Place Winner in
the Storefront Garden category of Mayor Menino’s 2007 Garden Contest.
The contest was launched eleven years ago as part of the Mayor’s
beautification initiative and recognizes the efforts of amateur
gardeners to
beautify their own small piece of Boston.
Our gardens are made up of three plots, each planted with a range of
shrubs, trees, perennials, and annuals. The shady plot bordering
Dartmouth Street
(on the east) was designed by landscape architect and church member Jim
Heroux, and was not included in consideration for the award, as it had
been
designed by a professional. The other two plots receive almost full sun
and were largely designed by Diane Gaucher and Jim Hood. Ask for a
description
and identification of each plant and a full list of botanical and
common names at the church desk.
Please take a moment to thank and congratulate Diane and Jim, who, with
a team of other dedicated volunteers, have spent countless hours
tending our
gardens. Diane, Jim, and others from the church will be presented with
the Mayor’s award at a ceremony in the Public Garden on Wednesday,
August 22.
