Bay Psalm Book
1640
The first book
published in the Colonies
|
Old South Church in Boston is the proud owner of two Bay Psalms books, the first fruits of the American press, published in Cambridge in 1640. They are held in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Department of the Boston Public Library. The translations, printing and publication of some 1600 copies (for use in congregational singing) was a labor of love for our Puritan ancestors. Today only eleven copies of the Bay Psalm books are known to be extant. Here, for the first time Old South members, scholars and the curious have complete digital access to each page through the unique page-turning software developed by Dr. Ian Christie-Miller. Don’t fail to use the “zoom in” technology. We hope you enjoy rare access to what is perhaps the single most iconic American book. |
