For the past fifteen years, Saturday's & Sunday's Bread has been serving more than a meal every weekend. The program has been offering hospitality and hope to everyone who drops by — guests and volunteers included.
Located in the basement of the Church of All Nations on Tremont Street, this organization has served nearly 250,000 meals since its inception in the fall of 1983, all by the hands of volunteers who come from a wide variety of faith traditions. That is part of the excitement of helping with this program: you get the chance to work side by side with other caring people in addition to helping the hungry on our own city streets.
So what can you expect if you volunteer for a four hour shift with one of our Sunday work teams? Besides a lot of friendly talk and laughter, you'll get a chance to either chop vegetables for the fresh salad, assist with the cooking and baking of the main course, fill juice pitchers and bread baskets, or set up the tables and place settings in the dining area. When the guests arrive, you can choose to fill plates in the kitchen or serve meals or coffee to the guests.
No matter how you help you can count on the fact that your efforts make it possible for nearly 200 people to receive a warm, well-balanced meal in an even warmer, friendly environment. Working a shift at Sunday's Bread gives you a chance to serve more than just a meal. It provides the opportunity to reach out to men and women in need with other people who care. It brings hope and humility to the servers as well as the served, reminding us of Jesus's words, "Just as you did it to one of the least of these . . . you did it to me" (Matthew 25:40).+
