Reaching In
Hospitality
Volunteers Schedule Now Posted
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU:
Sunday, May 18th during Fellowship Hour following 11 am
worship. All members and friends of our congregation who celebrate
their birthdays in May are
invited to find and meet others
who are
May-born! We will celebrate
with candles, cake and song.
The Congregational Care
& Support Committee hosts
this monthly celebration.
BREAD FOR THE SPIRIT:
Sunday, May 18th at 1 pm. Hungry for “Holy
Conversation” with others at
OSC? Interested in talking
with others
about
our diverse experiences with
God? You are invited to join
us for
conversation and discussion.
CARING
FOR ONE ANOTHER: Are
you aware of someone in our
congregation who might
appreciate a note of encouragement, a
home-cooked meal, a phone
call, visit or ride? Contact
Congregational Care & Support
Chair Jan
Monsma at
<JEMonsma@worldnet.att.net> or 781/393-2909.
CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP: With
pledges made attention now turns to
provision of talent, time, and
treasure in honor of those
commitments. Whether a financial
contribution placed in the offering plate, time
volunteered
in the kitchen of St. John the
Evangelist, or a meal provided for
a shut-in
contributions made by the Old
South congregation will make
a real
difference
in Boston and beyond. Consider
that Nancy Taylor, Quinn
Caldwell and the
staff of Old South, as well as
a host of national and
international
organizations, will utilize
funding you provide to spread
our
progressive
message of God’s love through
our many sponsored
activities. Makes one
feel good to have given
abundantly doesn’t it? -Kurt Gaertner,
Member,
Stewardship Committee
March
13, 2008
Dear Friends,
During the next six weeks, the UCC is hosting a German
guest from the
Rhineland Church named Ulrich Cyganek. He will be
visiting
churches and
conferences of the UCC from mid March until late
April. Ulrich is
the
director of organ and music education for the Rhineland
Church, a
prominent
position of leadership in a church and culture steeped in
musical
traditions. A talented musician and charming person,
his work
brings him to
universities and music schools, and he devotes much of his
time to
offering
oversight for the training of musicians throughout the
church.
He arrives this week as a guest of the Southern Conference
(UCC), which
has a long-standing partnership with the Rhineland Church;
after Easter, he
moves to visit in the Pennsylvania Central Conference
(UCC), where he
will
spend a week, before finally coming to Massachusetts where
we will host
him
as our guest. He hopes to learn more about how music and
worship "work"
in the UCC, observing choirs, working with choir directors
and organists, and
meeting pastors and church leaders who are involved in
shaping the
worship life
of congregations. Ulrich will be accompanying Harry Huff at
Old South
Church during the week of April 21 - 28, attending choir
rehearsal that Thursday, and staying through the Sunday
service.
He would enjoy being hosted by a family who might have an
interest in
Germany, music, or both, during his week in Boston.
To that end,
I would be
pleased to hear from anyone who might have a room, and the
heart to
offer
hospitality. I am quite sure that such generosity
would be
reciprocated!
Ideally, the host family/person would live close enough to
some form of
transportation (T, bus) so that Ulrich could travel easily
into the
city. I
do not imagine that you would need to entertain him, as he
is here for
professional reasons and is a self-starter.
If you or someone you know might be in a position to help
with
hospitality
for part or all of this week, kindly let me know (msburrows@ants.edu;
or,
617.257.4563).
Kind thanks!

GIVING ENVELOPES: You
can still receive 2007 stewardship
envelopes. Contact Helen McCrady at
<helen@oldsouth.org> or

OLD SOUTH GETS
GREENER: Good stewardship of God's abundance
goes beyond financial contributions (though they are very
important).
It means
caring for all of God's gifts, including the earth and its
resources. Old
South has widened its recycling capacity to include rigid
plastics
(numbers 1-7), glass bottles and tin. There are dedicated
bins for these
materials in
each of the kitchens. Please rinse all containers and make
sure
they get in
the recycling and not the trash. And as always, Old South
recycles all paper
products including cardboard. Designated blue receptacles
are located
in all
offices as well as in the first and fourth floor kitchens.
LARGE PRINT BIBLES:
The
Congregational Care & Support Committee will provide
large print Bibles for anyone who would appreciate their use during
worship. If this would be helpful to you, please contact Jan
Monsma
at
781/393-2909 or Associate Minister Quinn Caldwell.
CHANCEL GUILD: Want
to
add to the beauty and function of Old South? Join the
Chancel Guild to help with such tasks as caring for alter cloths,
trimming candles, polishing silver, handling flowers and
decorations, changing hangings, and brightening up the
Children’s Chapel. This
committee,
chaired by Elizabeth Pitcher, is a work in progress. Come
join us
to help decide what needs to be done and how it will be
organized. You
will be able to choose tasks and schedule your time as
needed. Contact
Betty Smith at 781/721-7777 to volunteer.
GOT PRAYERS?: Upholding
one another in prayer is one of the best ways the church can
care for one another. We would love to care for
you or ones
you love in this way by praying with you in the Pastoral
Prayer on Sunday
mornings. The best way to communicate your prayer requests
is to e-mail
Quinn at <quinn@oldsouth.org>, Nancy at
<nst@oldsouth.org>, or
Tadd at
<taddallmanmorton@yahoo.com>, or to be in touch with
one of us by
phone at 617/536-1970. We publicly pray using only first
names to
protect
privacy but, of course, welcome your account of the fuller
names and
stories as you
communicate your requests. Please do not use the prayer
box in the back
of
the sanctuary if your prayer is urgent. Note that
this is a
change. We’ve
decided that the prayer box is best used to collect the
prayers of
those who
visit our sanctuary over the course of a week; while we
try to collect
and
pray those requests every Sunday, we are not always able
to include
every
prayer that is put into the box.
SUNDAY FLOWERS FOR
2008: A
calendar is up in the elevator lobby where people may sign
up to donate Sunday flowers during 2007. This is a wonderful
contribution to our Sunday morning worship, as well as a
meaningful way
to honor and remember loved ones and special events. The
cost
is $50.
Contact Helen McCrady for more information.
NOTES FROM THE CARE CREW:

a knack for
writing notes? Do you value personal
cards delivered by snail mail?
Members
of the Care Crew cards and notes ministry express congratulations,
concern and
condolences on behalf of the Old South family to individuals
dealing
with illness, grief, or celebrating one of life’s joyful times. If
you are
interested, contact Jan
Monsma at 781/393-2909.
HAVE YOU JOINED THE CARE CREW?
