Grant
Application Form 2008
(Grant application process is now closed)
MOTHER’S DAY ALTERNATIVE
GIVING: Celebrate your mother’s caring spirit by making a
donation to Match-Up Interfaith Volunteers in lieu of a gift this
Mother’s Day. Match-Up organizes a network of volunteers who provide
support and companionship to elderly and disabled adults in the Boston
area. With every donation a beautiful card will be included as well as
an insert
explaining your gift. The Christian Service and Outreach Committee will
be
collecting monetary donations on Sunday during Fellowship Hour on May 4.
MAY CLOTHING DRIVE: Sundays in
May. All clothing is needed — children’s, women’s and men’s.
Items requested include shoes, outerwear and accessories. During the
month of May clothes will be collected in the cloakroom prior to both
services. Tax receipts will be given for clean, ready to wear clothing
to a maximum of $500. If you have any questions, contact Charlotte
Simpson at 617/266-5494 or <SimpsonCha@aol.com>.
SUNDAY’S BREAD: Sunday, May 18
at 12:30 pm. We need four people to respond to God’s call by
joining us to volunteer in the kitchen of St. John the
Evangelist on Bowdoin Street. Meet outside the Old South Sanctuary
following worship. We usually end by 4 pm. Bring lunch and comfortable
work-clothes. Call the Front Desk at 617/536-1970 if you plan to
participate or would like further information.
AIDS WALK: Sunday, June 1 at
8:30 am at the Charles River Hatch Shell. Join the Old South
team for this annual fundraiser benefiting the AIDS Action
Committee of Massachusetts. The Old South team has proudly participated
in
the walk each year, raising significant funds and becoming the top
fundraising religious organization for the past several years. If you
are
unable to walk, consider sponsoring an Old South member. To join the Old
South team, visit <www.aac.org>. For more information, contact
Jim McDonnel at 617/421-8656.
COINS FOR CLOTHING: Every
Sunday, following the Early Service and later
at Fellowship Hour, a jar stands ready to receive coins for Rosie’s
Place
and
the Pine Street Inn to purchase undergarments for homeless men and
women.
GOT PRAYERS?: Upholding
one another in prayer is one of the best ways
the church can care for one another. We would love to care for you or
ones
you love in this way by praying with you in the Pastoral Prayer on
Sunday
mornings. The best way to communicate your prayer requests is to email
Quinn at <quinn@oldsouth.org> or Nancy at
<nst@oldsouth.org>, or
to be in touch with one of us by phone at 617/536-1970. We publicly
pray only first
names to protect privacy, but of course welcome your account of the
fuller
names and stories as you communicate your requests. Please do not use
the
prayer box in the back of the sanctuary if your prayer is urgent.
CALL
FOR OLD SOUTH BOOKSTORE VOLUNTEERS: City Mission Society,
the service arm of the Metropolitan Boston Association of the UCC, is
opening a bookstore at Old
South. For months now, CMS volunteers have been
collecting, sorting, and
shelving used books in our basement Club Room. Some of the books have been sent to the Prison Book
Program in Dorchester, while
many of the children’s books
have been sent to libraries destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The rest will be sold from a
bookstore in the Club Room, to be
open three days per week.
Proceeds will support local ministries as well as library rebuilding efforts along the Gulf
Coast. CMS is looking for
volunteers from Old South interested in staffing the bookstore; please
be in touch with Associate
Minister Quinn Caldwell if you are interested.
REACHING FORWARD
CHRISTIAN
STEWARDSHIP
One of the fascinating aspects of living in the city is to be faced
with the
joys and stark realities of life on a daily basis. Great restaurants,
wonderful music and theater, and world class museums juxtaposed with the
plight of thousands of homeless people in Boston who routinely go to bed
hungry and scared, and news of all the young men and women in Iraq
getting
shot at and blown up from undetected mines, and of the hundreds of pets
that
were abandoned or brought to the shelter last month due to people losing
their homes and to the elderly who are alone all day with few resources
to
get out and to the ever increasing signs of global warming that threaten
polar bears habitat and other lesser known species, not to mention the
human
race. It’s overwhelming when you really think about what’s wrong with
our
beautifully imperfect world. Personally I don’t have the time or the
money
to support all the worthy causes out there. But I found a place in the
city
that helps me find peace, clarity on important issues, friendship,
inspiration and a means to help those who are defenseless against the
vagaries of life for whatever reason. That place is Old South Church. I
have
come to trust the leaders of our Church and their judgment for knowing
where
to make philanthropic investments. It’s truly a blessing and I give
what I
can so that the money is used wisely. Thank you Old
South.

LEGACIES OF
LOVE/BUILDING THE FUTURE:
In the vernacular they say, “You can’t take it with you.” In the
church, we put it this way: “For we brought nothing into the world, so
that we can take nothing out of it.” (I Timothy 6:7). As
Christians we support the ministries of the church
by giving during our lifetimes … but we can also include the church in
our
estate plans. If you have done so, please let us know so that we can
thank
you and list you as a member of the Mary Norton Society. If you have
not,
will you prayerfully consider it? Just as we depend on the generosity of
previous generations, the future of Old South depends on our
generosity. For
information contact Helen McCrady, Senior Church Administrator, or your
own financial planner.
PRAYER SHAWL
MINISTRY
Our mission is to make
and donate prayer shawls to those in our community who are ill,
families with new babies, or folks in need of a visit and some comfort.
Contact Betty or Elizabeth Pitcher at 617/536-7808 for more information.
A LEGACY: Have
you remembered Old South Church in your will? There are a variety of
advantageous ways to make a planned gift to Old South.
Contact Helen McCrady for more information.
WEEKLY VIGIL FOR PEACE:
Do you feel called to create peace? Make a Christian witness for an end
to violence? Each week, Christian peace activists
from all over the city gather for a peace vigil on Copley Square, at
the
corner
of Dartmouth and Boylston Streets. Morning prayer begins at 7:30 am each
Wednesday, with a vigil and public witness following from 8:15-9 am.
Those
interested can attend either or both parts of the morning's service.
Please
contact Cynthia Chace MacNiel of Trinity Church at
<ccm77@verizon.net> for more information.
VOLUNTEER
OPPORTUNITY:
Volunteer as an escort to accompany seniors from
their home to a doctor’s appointment and
return. Contact
Match-Up Interfaith Volunteers at
617/482-1510. Visit their website
