Greetings and welcome to Old South Church in Boston.
Among the oldest churches in this country, Old South’s history and legacy have been—and continue to be—inextricably linked to this nation's quest for freedom and justice. Today, as a progressive, vibrant, and diverse Christian congregation in the heart of Boston, we continue to outfit ourselves for tender ministries of mercy, justice, and beauty in the 21st century. Old South opens its doors to the city, to inquirers, to tourists, to the needy, and to a congregation (of members, friends and family—both the curious and the committed) who call this their church home.
Inspired by Jesus’ extravagant welcome, Old South has for more than three centuries sought to advocate for the marginalized and the oppressed. Our life as a community is grounded in our belief in the presence of the Living God whom we come to know through a life shaped by the rhythms of worship, prayer, scripture, generosity, kindness, and hospitality.
In our worship (a defining and formative act of Christian community) we draw on a variety of traditions, from ancient to contemporary. These are expressed differently and beautifully through our five services of worship: First Worship (informal and vibrant), Festival Worship (grand and expressive), Evening Worship (ancient, timeless and alive), Jazz Worship (eclectic and bathed in candlelight) and Healing Worship (gentle and tender). Through a broad program of service, outreach, education, and fellowship, we strive to be part of God’s work of mending the world. And in all things, we rely upon the healing, unconditional nature of God’s love and grace to be our help and guide.
We are so pleased that you have found your way to our web site. We hope you find these pages useful and informative, providing a glimpse into a community grounded in Jesus, alive to the Spirit, and embarked upon the adventure of Christian faith. No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome at Old South Church!
