LOOKING UP (WORSHIP)
EARLY WORSHIP: Sundays at 9 am in the Gordon Chapel. In the intimacy of the Gordon Chapel we turn our attention to God in an informal service of word and sacrament. Led by Rev. Liz Myer with the assistance of Revs. Dick and Elinor Yeo.
FESTIVAL WORSHIP: Sundays at 11 am in the sanctuary. Gathered in Old South’s grand sanctuary, our worship is inspired by the Old South Choir and organ, as well as by serious attention to preaching. Led by Revs. Nancy Taylor, Quinn Caldwell and Liz Myer, Minister of Music Harry Huff and the Old South Choir.
JAZZ WORSHIP SERVICE: Thursdays at 6 pm in the Gordon Chapel. It’s fresh. It’s familiar. It’s informal and participatory. It is Old South’s most eclectic worship experience. Have a little jazz with your worship! Led by Rev. Quinn Caldwell, Old South seminarians and The Willie Sordillo Trio.
HEALING PRAYER SERVICE: Second Sundays at 10 am in the Children's Chapel. Tap into God’s healing love with a gentle service of prayers and reflection led by the Rev. Ken Orth, a pastoral counselor and spiritual director. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: Those seeking Christian baptism for their children should contact Senior Minister Nancy Taylor.
POMMERN VILLAGE CHOIR: Sunday, October 19 during 11 am worship. The Pommern Village Choir comes to us directly from Central Tanzania. This service will be a cross-cultural, musical experience not to be missed! An all-church sandwich lunch will follow worship. During this time the choir will talk about life in their village and about their fresh water project.
SHAPING UP (SPIRITUALITY & STUDY) CHURCH SCHOOL: Church School offerings include Arts of Worship programming for children, and discussion, reflection and fellowship time for the Youth Group. Other offerings include the Chime Choir, the Drum Choir and vocal opportunities, as well as child care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. For more information, contact Tricia Hazeltine at 617/425-5148.
BIBLE STUDY: Sundays at 9:45 am in the Sam Johnson Room. Prepare to experience worship more deeply by studying and reflecting on the preaching text(s) for the day. Led by members and Old South clergy.
BAY PSALM BOOKS ENLIGHTENED: Tuesday, October 14 at 6 pm at the Boston Public Library, Copley Branch, Orientation Room. Only eleven known copies of the Bay Psalm Book (the first book written and printed in Colonial North America) survive. Remarkably, two copies of this important book are housed in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Department at the BPL, on loan from Old South’s own collection. Dr. Ian Christie-Miller has developed a process for digitizing the substrates of paper to uncover unique characteristics, which he has applied toward the two copies of the Bay Psalm Book. He will discuss this technique and his most recent find.
THEOLOGICAL BOOK GROUP: Mondays through October 27 at 6 pm in the Sam Johnson Room. The Essential Reinhold Niebuhr: Selected Essays and Addresses by Reinhold Niebuhr, edited by Robert McAfee Brown. Niebuhr was arguably the most influential theologian of the twentieth century. He was an incisive political thinker and remains a perennial disturber of the complacencies and clichés of the standard “right” and “left.” Join us for this introduction to his thought and theology. Books and reading schedules are available at the Front Desk for $20. Contact Associate Minister Quinn Caldwell if the cost is prohibitive for you.
MARGARET TROST FORUM: Sunday, October 19 at 9:45 am in Mary Norton Hall. Margaret Trost, founder of the “What If?” Foundation, will read excerpts from her book, On That Day Everybody Ate, and discuss the foundation’s mission and the current food crisis.
BECK LECTURE LUNCHEON: Monday, October 20 at 12 pm in Mary Norton Hall. The Massachusetts Bible Society and Old South Church are pleased to announce 2008’s Beck Lecture luncheon, The Trouble with Scripture: The Politics. Massachusetts State Representative Byron Rushing will speak. The luncheon cost is $12 per person. Reservations are required by Monday, October 13. To register, call 617/542-2230 or e-mail <admin@massbible.org>.
WELCOMING IN
INQUIRERS’ CLASS: TODAY at 9:45 am. Those who are new to Old South, who want to explore membership, or who just want to learn more about us, are urged to attend today’s Inquirers’ class. Led by Old South clergy, the class is an opportunity to meet some of the leadership of Old South and to learn about our history, programs and ministry.
ACTING OUT (MUSIC & THE ARTS)
OLD SOUTH CHOIR BROADWAY CABARET: Sunday, October 26 at 12:30 pm in Mary Norton Hall. Come, be entertained, amused and inspired with a plethora of your favorite show tunes! This Cabaret show will be preceded by a tasty luncheon at 12:30 pm. There is no admission fee, but a suggested free-will offering of $10/person will be collected to help defray the cost of our choir’s first annual retreat. RSVP by calling the Front Desk at 617/536-1970 no later than Tuesday, October 21. Childcare is available upon request by Tuesday, October 21, as well.
MEETING UP
STUDENT SECTION: Sundays following 11 am worship in the Children's Chapel. Nervous about coffee hour? Looking to find other students to talk to? Come hang out in the Student Section—an informal space within the larger coffee hour set aside just for students. Whether you’re new in the area or a regular, come chat about the day’s worship, upcoming events and student life in general. Hosted by Elissa Johnk, Field Education Intern.
20S/30S GROUP: Join the 20s/30s group as we express our faith through friendships, discussion, and service. For information, contact Stacey Sedgwick at 617/595-7161 or <miamaya222@yahoo.com>. Dinner & a Movie: Friday, October 17 at 7 pm. We’ll meet at the church and then grab a bite to eat. Afterward we’ll head to the theater for a 9:30 or 10 pm showing. Film TBD.
MOTHERS’ GROUP: Sunday, October 19 at 10 am in the fourth floor kitchen. Young or old, new or seasoned—you are warmly invited to gather together with other Old South mothers to meet, greet, commiserate, and share life stories. Please bring your hopes and dreams for this group as we look forward to a new season of meeting one another, meeting God, and meeting the world. Childcare available. For more information, contact Maggie Mode at <mjmode@earthlink.net>, or Tricia Hazeltine at <phazeltine@comcast.net>.
BREAD FOR THE SPIRIT: Sunday, October 19 at 1 pm. Hungry for “Holy Conversation” with others at OSC? Interested in talking with others about our diverse experiences with God? This month we’re going to share a lighthearted conversation about prayer and the role it plays in our own spiritual lives. If you have any favorite prayers or Bible Scriptures, hymn lyrics or poems that you use as prayer, please bring them along to share. Whether you’ve been praying all your life or your just beginning to pray for the first time, all are welcome.
AUTUMN APPLE EXTRAVAGANZA: Sunday, October 26 from 10-11 am. Old South Church will be hosting an “Autumn Apple Extravaganza” for families with toddlers and infants. Enjoy apple crafts, apple treats, apple stickers—and above all meet other families who consider Old South to be the apple of their eye! For further details, or to RSVP, contact Rev. Elizabeth Myer Boulton at <ejmyer@oldsouth.org>.
REACHING IN
CARING FOR ONE ANOTHER: Are you aware of someone in our congregation who might appreciate a note of encouragement, a home-cooked meal, a phone call, visit or ride? Contact Congregational Care & Support Co-Chairs Anna Yoder at <anna.yoder@verizon.net> and Carolyn Arrington at <cottages@verizon.net>.
REACHING OUT
OCTOBER CLOTHING DRIVE: Clothing, especially for children and teens as well as for men and women, will be collected in the cloakroom prior to 11 am worship during the month of October. Receipts for tax purposes will be available for clean, ready to wear clothing to a maximum of $500. For more information, contact Charlotte Simpson at 617/266-5494 or <SimpsonCha@aol.com>.
SUNDAY’S BREAD: Sunday, October 19 at 12:30 pm. Help us respond to God’s call by joining us to volunteer in the kitchen of St. John the Evangelist on Bowdoin Street. Meet outside the Old South Sanctuary following worship. We usually end by 4 pm. Bring lunch and comfortable work-clothes. Call the Front Desk at 617/536-1970 if you plan to participate or would like further information.
VOTE NO ON QUESTION #1: Join GBIO (Greater Boston Interfaith Organization) and the Old South Christian Service and Outreach Committee in voting no on Question #1—a reckless initiative which if passed would eliminate the personal income tax. Join us for an educational forum led by Old South Member and Professor Emeritus at Harvard Business School Dwight Crane TODAY at 12:30, and for a phone bank to reach out to registered voters on Saturday, October 18 from 9:30 am-3:30 pm in Mary Norton Hall. For more information on the campaign, contact Alliea Groupp at 617/435-4220 or <aegroupp@juno.com>.
TAKING CARE Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so..." One of my warmest childhood memories is of singing this song every week at the beginning of Sunday School at the Edgartown Methodist Church....a song that served as a weekly affirmation of unconditional love, not just for me but for everyone. Jesus loves me and nothing I do or think will change that love… I believed that then. I still believe that now… a fact that has made a profound and joyful difference in my life. As members of the Stewardship Committee we are asked to reflect on and share our thoughts about committing our resources to Old South. For me, it is not at all complicated. I'm one of the lucky ones who has always known and felt the love of Jesus and the Lord. Old South, like my favorite song, consistently reminds us all of God’s amazing love, and through its programs spreads God's love not only locally, but far and wide. By pledging to Old South and supporting its good work I proudly participate and for this I am grateful. —Marilyn Jackson Adams, Stewardship Committee
