Weddings at Old South

Beauty. History. Sacredness. Old South Church in Boston has long been a favored location for weddings. Be it the grandly adorned splendor of the Sanctuary, the gothic beauty of the Gordon Chapel, or the quiet intimacy of the Children’s Chapel, the church offers a range of spaces in which to hold a wedding ceremony. The church’s prime location in Back Bay’s Copley Square offers ease of access to a host of nearby hotels and reception venues, proximity to popular photo shooting locations like the Boston Public Garden, and the convenience of nearby public transportation.

In keeping with our long legacy of social justice and inclusivity, Old South Church in Boston proclaims the equal rights of all people, including the legal right for individuals to marry the person of their choice.

Planning the Ceremony

While the Church typically works with couples who seek a Christian service of marriage, we are pleased as well to extend hospitality to interfaith, inter-religious, and ecumenical couples and will work with you to accommodate your needs. A wedding at Old South Church is first and foremost a service of worship, celebrating the presence and asking the blessing of God.

We anticipate that all couples will work closely with Old South's Wedding Outreach Minister, who will contact you after a wedding date has been confirmed. The minister welcomes this opportunity to get to know the couple. The couple will meet with the minister for premarital counseling. The minister will guide the couple through the understandings of Christian marriage, the form and shape of the service, and the couple's thoughts and feelings about marriage. Wedding services may be jointly officiated by an Old South minister and another clergy member.

In keeping with the musical tradition of Old South Church and dignity of the occasion, the Old South Organist will provide organ music for the wedding (or will secure a substitute). Vocal soloists or additional instrumentalists can also be arranged if you desire. Musical selections should be of a religious/classical nature as approved by the Minister of Music.

The Day of the Wedding

Out of consideration for the Church's Sunday morning worship, the latest starting time for a Saturday wedding is 5:00 PM. The earliest starting time for a Sunday afternoon wedding is 3:00 PM. A wedding rehearsal is usually held a day or two before the wedding.

The church will be open one and a half hours before your wedding is scheduled to begin. The wedding party should arrive at the church 40 minutes before the service.

Due to our downtown location, Old South is unable to provide parking for the wedding party, vendors, or guests. Likewise, we cannot block off spaces on Boylston Street. However, several garages are located within walking distance of the church.

Photographs may be taken either immediately before or after the ceremony. Flash photography is only permitted during the processional and recessional of the wedding service. Videography of the ceremony should be approved in advance by the officiating minister.
