LENT 2020

Taking it to Heart: Learning the Stories of Jesus

We are a people of stories (Noah and the Ark, Joseph and his coat, the Magi, Jesus’ Temptation). In the Season of Lent we dive deeply into four Jesus stories (Temptation in the Wilderness, the Samaritan Woman, a Man Born Blind, and the Death of Lazarus) to see reflected in these ancient, sacred stories our own selves and lives. Old Southers are invited to learn one of these stories–or another biblical story of your choice—by heart.

- PLEASE NOTE: THE PROGRAMMING BELOW IS SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION PENDING THE ONGOING COVID-19 SITUATION. UP-TO-DATE DETAILS HERE.

Lenten Community Hour: Rehearsing the Gospel

Sundays in Lent at 10 a.m. in  Mary Norton Hall
3/8 - John 3:1-17 •  3/15 - John 4:5-42 •  3/22 - John 9:1-41 • 3/29 - John 11:1-44
In the season of Lent we will dive deep into some of the best loved Gospel passages, exploring their language, playing with their context and rehearsing their possibilities. Guided by the scholarship of Rev. Anna Carter Florence, we will be set loose with these stories and work together to "find something true". If you'd like to learn more and take on a Lenten book study, copies of Anna's book "Rehearsing Scripture" are available in the Crawford Library.

Family Lenten Activity

Saturday April 4th, 9 -11 a.m.
Families with children are invited to join Kate Nintcheu for a morning of learning and crafting together. We'll meet Jack Millard, an OSC friend who will teach us about his special ministry of sharing hope, and lead us in creating some little boats of hope to share with others. RSVP to Kate at children@oldsouth.org by April 1st.

Holy Week

PALM SUNDAY | APRIL 5
9:00 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Celebrate Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem and the start of Holy Week with Old South Church’s exuberant parade and the waving of palms.

MAUNDY THURSDAY | APRIL 9
7:00 p.m.  | Service of Tenebrae
This service of Tenebrae (Latin for Shadows) tells the story of Jesus' last days. Led by the Willie Sordillo Jazz Ensemble and Festival Choir, we journey from the Communion Table to the Cross as the light around us dims.

GOOD FRIDAY | APRIL 10
The Chapel is open throughout the day for prayer and contemplation.
12:00 p.m. | The Seven Last Words
On the most somber day of the Christian year, we gather in prayer and song to hear the Seven Last Words of Jesus and mourn the death that changed the world.
7:00 p.m. | Choral Service
The evening of Good Friday is met with our deepest prayers and laments. Acknowledging that words alone cannot hold the mystery of this day, the story of Jesus' passion is dramatically conveyed through the music of Sir John Stainer's beloved oratorio, The Crucifixion.

EASTER SUNDAY | APRIL 12
9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
The triumph of the Christian story of resurrection informs a service of worship that is characterized by thunderous celebration. Trumpet and organ, voice and timpani combine to bring us to the empty tomb, to peer inside, to see it is empty, to give God wild thanksgiving for the hope of everlasting life.
