Sanctuary open hours, all-church anti-racism read, new Community Hour series, and more.
Due to the state of our nation, we are opening the Sanctuary for prayer on a limited basis, Tuesday (today), Wednesday, and Thursday, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Depending on how that goes, we may expand into next week.
We cannot allow destructive rage to distract us from the root of the rage: injustice, the terrors of being black in a racist society, a system that favors and privileges some of us while demeaning and murdering others of us. The fact is that people don't revolt just just because...they revolt when circumstances have grown revolting. The rage we are seeing across the country is borne of genuine desperation. The pandemic just added more fuel to a smoldering heap of desperation.
Dear Old South Church: We are all experiencing anxiety and fatigue over not being able to see the future, plan ahead, or catch sight of even a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Does this tunnel ever end? To that end, your Blue Ribbon Covid-19 Task Force met Wednesday evening. I am so very grateful for them - doctors and nurses, government officials, social worker and public health experts, all of whom know and love this church - taking time from hectic schedules to put their good heads and hearts together for us. In this season of Pentecost, 2020, our prayer is that the Spirit will blow in ways that upset normalcy and thus call us into new paths to be the Church in a vastly changed world.

In this time of great challenge, Old South Church knows the power of being a Christian community conscious of the most vulnerable among us. Thanks to you, we are blessed to provide grants totaling over $100,000 per year to phenomenal nonprofits working in Boston.
For the past seven years I have had the opportunity to join with other clergy and members of South Church to worship with the inmates at MCI Framingham on Good Friday.
