OLD SOUTH ENCYCLOPEDIA SUBMISSION PROCESS

I.  How to submit your essay

  1. Check the index below to choose a topic. Topics that are currently being edited are show in red, and those that are available for research are in black. You may also write on a topic that is not yet listed in the index.
  2. Once you've chosen a topic, please email encyclopedia@oldsouth.org with:
    1. Your name
    2. Your phone number
    3. The topic you would like to research and write on. If you want to research a topic that has already been chosen, please either choose an alternative topic or indicate in your email that you’d like to collaborate with the person currently working on that topic.
    4. Your connection to the topic
  3. We will then send you instructions for how to submit your research, including a deadline.

II.  Rules for providing a submission

  1. What to include: All submissions must include the writer’s full name, email or home address, phone number, topic, and the writer’s connection (if any) to the topic.
  2. Copyright: A submission may not be copyrighted by the contributor; upon submission it will become the property of Old South Church. Old South may copyright the encyclopedia to be published containing the finalized essays.
  3. Submission usage: The use of submissions will be determined by Old South Church. Submissions that are used may be revised, reduced in size, expanded or combined with other submissions on the same or related topics.
  4. Citations: At the end of the article, please cite your sources including author, title, and year of publication. If it is online, please also include the URL, and if it's a magazine, include the volume/issue number. If you use multiple sources, please alphabatize them by last name of the author. If you use a direct quote, write the author, title, year of publication and page number in parentheses directly following the quote inside of the article.
  5. Factual backing: Essays should be supported by public sources.
  6. Multiple writers: If another person is writing on the same topic as in your submission, we reserve the right to use that other source or combine that other source with your submission.
  7. Viewing submissions: If your submission is used, it will be added to our file at tinyurl.com/A-ZEntries. If someone else has submitted a topic on the same or a similar topic it will be in read-only form for you but you will be able to suggest changes to it by emailing encyclopedia@oldsouth.org. Changes to original essays are subject to correction, change or deletion by Old South Church.
  8. Length: The requested number of words for each entry topic will be sent to you via email by the administrator.
  9. Attribution: All contributors will be listed at the end of the book.
  10. Submitting without internet: Those without internet access may submit typed or hand written essays to the reception desk. The same rules apply to both online submissions and hand written submissions.
