Our Holy Week services will be both in-person and streamed online.
PALM SUNDAY | MARCH 29
9am in the Chapel and 11am in the Sanctuary
We mark Jesus’ triumphal entrance into Jerusalem as our shouts of Hosanna fade to the drama of the coming week.
MAUNDY THURSDAY | APRIL 2
6pm in the Chapel
On Maundy Thursday, gather at the communion table where love is both commandment and gift. Rooted in Jesus’ nourishing call to love one another as he has loved us, this tender service will invite us to remember that in the face of the cross, Jesus entrusts his followers to each other. Guided in worship by the Thursday Night Church Band, featuring guitar, cello, piano, cajon and voices raised in harmony.
GOOD FRIDAY | APRIL 3
7pm in the Chapel
On Good Friday this year, we invite you to immerse yourself in 19th-century composer César Franck’s setting of “The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross,” a powerful depiction of Christ’s final moments. In this opulently scored oratorio, Franck weaves together commentary on Jesus’ utterances with excerpts from the Old and New Testaments, as well as from portions of the “Stabat Mater.” In setting these Latin texts to music, Franck reveals a rich palette of compositional devices: different-sized ensembles, distinct textures, formal variety and sophisticated harmony. Laments and simple passages for choir in unison mix with passages of great drama, all of which combine to produce a vast musical tapestry marked by Franck’s distinct compositional voice.
EASTER SUNDAY | APRIL 5
9am and 11am in the Sanctuary
The triumph of the Christian story of resurrection informs a service of worship that is characterized by thunderous celebration. Trumpet and organ, voice and timpani combine to bring us to the empty tomb, to peer inside, to see it is empty, to give God wild thanksgiving for the hope of everlasting life.
Easter accessibility notes: Both services are wheelchair accessible; all-gender single stall bathroom; hearing loop for Sanctuary services; wheelchair accessible overflow room with on-screen livestream.
Easter Sunday for children: Childcare will be available on the 3rd floor from 8:20 - 12:30, and we will have Children's Worship for a portion of the 9am and 11am services. For details please reach out to Director of Children and Families, Kate Nintcheu (children@oldsouth.org)
