Allston-Brighton Food Pantry thanks OSC

July 31, 2012

Dear Friends at Old South,

We wish to give a hearty and heartfelt THANK YOU to Old South Church for your ongoing support of the Allston-Brighton Food Pantry. We enjoyed hosting the OSC volunteers who came out to help us serve in July, at our Wednesday Community Supper and our Saturday food basket distribution. We also appreciated the dessert donations for Wednesday and for coming by to say hello at a recent Sunday service.

We so appreciate the food donations that keep coming in. They add variety to the standard items we provide, and we often add your donations to the special children’s baskets reserved for families with children.

Here’s some additional information about the food pantry we’d like to share:

  • ABFP was founded about 30 years ago by Evelyn Ware, a parishioner here at Brighton Allston Congregational Church. She did all the cooking in her own kitchen back then.
  • We serve 50 – 70 guests on Wednesday.
  • We provide 175 Allston Brighton households with food baskets every month.
  • We are almost completely run by volunteers. They have volunteered with the food pantry from six months to more than 10 years.
  • Because of Old South’s support, we have the amazing Lois Corman for administrative support (3 hours a week).
  • Also because of Old South, we have a large freezer and refrigerator, allowing us to store fresh produce to distribute in the food baskets.
  • We get help from a number of young people, and volunteering with us helps them to grow and develop new skills.
  • We work with Boston Youth Opportunities Unlimited, a leadership and skills training program in the City of Boston; with a youth group from the local YMCA; with high school kids from Boston College, Latin Academy, and young people from Wayside Youth & Family Support Network.

We are so grateful to be part of this larger community that cares and feeds both body and soul. Peace and joy and happy summer breezes.
